== Love Notes ==
Hey there lovelies, I hope your Monday started your week off well <3 As I'm sitting here typing this I have my son asleep under one arm, so I apologize if this is a bit scattered. I saw this infographic today and it made me think of you all. I don't know about you, but I spent a lot of my life thinking I had to do everything, excel at everything, have all the money, and the car, and the house, and the kids, etc. But you know what? Life isn't about having everything. It's about finding the things you love and matter most to you and focusing on them. The things that matter most to me will absolutely be different from everyone else (we may share some of the same) but no two people are exactly the same when it comes to interests, and thats beautiful. Dig deep into the things you love crew, and remember you don't have to feel any shame for the things that mean the most to you. Do you like video games? Or Ornithology? How about fanfiction? Or maybe Indy 500 races? Do you find joy when you're alone in the woods? Or sitting out with friends at a bar? Do you enjoy being alone? Or maybe you love to sing your heart out at karaoke? Whatever it is you love-- embrace it, whether it's "Weird" by someone else's standards or not. If it makes you smile, if it makes you enjoy your time on this little blue dot-- dive in lovelies, with no regrets. I so very hope that even if it's only little bits at a time this week you get to spend doing the things you love, whatever that may be. Rest well and drink some water tonight <3 Love you crew

I remember, during the last federal election in the USA, when a US-based friend complemented me on how engaged I was in an election that didn't affect me. And until that point I'd thought it was common knowledge in the USA that they had military bases absolutely all over the world, and that there were many ways their internal politics impact other countries.
This article is a few years old now, but gives a good brief rundown on the spread of US military bases specifically internationally -
The whole article is worth a flick through, but in short - there's (at least) 750 or so US military bases in other countries, and there may be more the Pentagon hasn't openly identified. Japan has the most US military facilities at 120 active bases, with Germany number 2 at 119.
There's not really an end point to this. To bring it back to Good Omens briefly, I never questioned the US air base in the UK when I read the book or watched the show, and hadn't until now clicked that its obviousness was not apparent to others. I guess I want it to be an opportunity to think a bit deeper about the possibility of things like, say, international military operations and their effect on their host (allied) countries. I blathered on about an example of such an impact in Australia, then stuck it under the cut so you didn't have to slog through it unless you were keen.
~~~
Sometimes, these bases have direct political consequences in their host countries. One of the Australian bases, Pine Gap (a facility controlled by Australia and the USA), is used in global surveillance. In the 1970s our then-Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, considered closing the base as part of a larger move away from being entirely beholden to the UK and the USA. The CIA and MI6 worked together until the Govener-General (the UK monarch's official representative over the Australian Government) dismissed Gough Whitlam and appointed the opposition party's leader as our new PM. The dismissal, on the 11th of November 1975, was the last day of parliment for the year, and was the day that Whitlam was to brief the Australian Parliment on the secret CIA presence in Australia. A lot of the information available on Pine Gap was either disclosed during WikiLeaks, or came out after decades of petitioning under freedom of information acts by journalists.
Hello, Mr Gaiman,
I’m watching Good Omens Season 1 with my mum (in hopes to get her to watch Season 2 with me) and she pointed out to me that there is a U.S airbase in the UK.
Is that a normal thing or is there a particular reason Armageddon was set in an American airbase despite the fact they’re in the UK?
At the time we wrote the book there were a lot of US airbases in the UK.
Now there are only about half a dozen.
#good omens#auspol#never thought I'd be combining those tags but here we are#US military bases abroad#the Tadfield airbase#Pine Gap#again unrelated but here we are
Words, words, mere words
Super glad the Eorzibethean basics infographic is useful! :3 I've seen in a couple of places folks looking for a wordlist as well. This stuff is super relaxing for me, so conscripting @davetheshady once more into helping put a quick Eorzibethean wordlist together.
The words that follow were selected by the extremely scientific method of skimming Urianger's lines in Dialogue Collection FFXIV and @uriangertxt and being like hey that's a fun word, gimme one of those, yeah I'll take one of them, and that one too…and then sprinkling in a couple more just for the heck of it. Pinned Post: Hello!
And so you found me. I write meta for shows I like here (find really old meta at So Thinky), create thinky GIF sets, and write fan poetry. There's no hiding my love of Glee, but I'm also fannish about Sherlock, The X-Files, Star Wars, Marvel, Good Omens and Our Flag Means Death. I keep a Loki side blog at So Loki.
I do blog sometimes about teaching and writing and tech-related things, and love infographics and tiny (meaning miniature) artistic things.
If you’re looking for some of my old Meta, try my MasterPost, as well as a MasterPost for GIFsets I’d created when the show aired. Here are common tags I use as well, especially for Glee-related stuff.
There are several storylines in Discworld, and yet each book (after The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic, maybe get TLF before you finish CoM btw) works as a standalone novel. Which is my favorite type of big series. The first Discworld book I ever read as a kid was actually Wintersmith, not even the first Tiffany Aching book but still so good it got me into all of Discworld and Terry Pratchett's writing. I love Color of Magic but not everyone does. There's a bunch of "Discworld reading order" type of infographics if you wanna look that up, which show the different series-within-the-series. Since you like Good Omens I bet you'll be into the witches books (the witch stuff in GO felt the Most Terry to me), and the Death books, probably Small Gods too.
Can a Terry Pratchett fan answer a question for me? Is the Discworld series completed? By this I mean, I know it isn't a series but rather a set of stories in a universe but when I get to the last book, am I going to be left in a place where I feel okay? Or does it leave off feeling unfinished? I got the Color of Magic for my birthday, and it feels like owning a brick of solid gold. I know I'm going to love it, if my love of Good Omens is anything to go by. And I already know I'm going to be sad when I reach the end of the series but I'd like to know now if I should prepare myself for a different sort of good cry when it's over.
the post about Edwin's clothes was very interesting to read!! loved the framing and info :D
can you make the one about Charles' wardrobe??
I am so so happy you liked it! It was also so interesting to put together!
Definitely will, working on one right now! It just takes me some time to put everything together and lay it out somewhat accordingly.
Maybe you’ve seen it already, but I did one just about Charles’ pins and buttons and patches.
I did ask Kelli Dunsmore (costume designer) for some help with them and she gladly answered, so I can say that at least the info there should match with him!!
Thank you again! It takes a long time to put these infographics together, because I could just do a normal post with photos here and save hours of work, but it’s so gratifying to know that there are people out there who like these slides!!
Serious ask from a good fan & a creator with too many WIPs. How do you juggle multiple projects with good inspiration constantly making you jump between them, and how do you take a hiatus from working on any of them without feeling disappointed or inadequate? That being said I hope you own hiatus is going well and that you are relaxing enough. :)
I’m not sure if this will be helpful because I honestly juggle multiple projects and jump between them… on purpose.
Like, multitasking on several projects is actually a part of my work ethic at this point. When I only have one project, it’s actually harder for me to do anything at all.
And that sounds weird, but let me try to explain…
All projects have a seasonal up and down rhythm. Sometimes you’re inspired and you make a lot of art - and sometimes you’re just NOT. This is in no way a new concept but personally I categorize my productivity this way:
When I lose interest and my current (and only) project enters into a winter (non-productive) period, I end up empty handed. There’s nothing I can do, I just have to wait it out.
But if I have multiple projects going on, I actually have a better time with it because I can combine resting from one project with being productive in another.
For example, I’m currently taking a break from WD!Steven. Well…. I’m arguably not TOTALLY taking a break - but I’m currently not writing plot-heavy comics. Instead, I’m focusing on some of my other accounts. I’m active in the Good Omens fandom instead. On the back-burner, I also have fics I’m writing for whenever I get bored of art and need a break from visual creating. And when I’m tired of THAT (storywriting in general) I have some projects on the FAR back-burner that are infograph-oriented that I could fall back on.
So if you can visualize this - I’m basically keeping my options open so that I never have to STOP making something. I always have a backup project that needs to be done.
I’m kinda in a perpetual state of switching between projects and prioritizing whatever I’m most motivated to do. This way, I’m never caught without something to work on, and at the same time, I get my needed rest from projects that are naturally just not moving forward at all.
Would I recommend this to others?
I think not. I think this kind of juggling act can very easily destroy your life if you aren’t also totally committed to giving yourself plenty of rest. And I think other people can do DO get burnout from this type of work-style.
Nonetheless, it has been working for me for about 2-3 years now and I’m personally very happy on this schedule - at least creatively. I think what stresses me out at THIS point is actually not my art projects but my IRL work - where I feel ultimately unchallenged. If I had a job I enjoyed (like back when I was teaching daily and making my own curriculum for EFL lessons) I would end up tesselating work stuff into this as well.
Anyway, hope that makes sense and uhhh…. Sorry, I ended up kinda going off-topic!
(Please don’t come at me with ‘THAT’S UNHEALTHY YOU NEED TO REST’ - I know myself better than you do, and I’m fully aware of what my brain can and cannot do. My brain’s natural state is “flipbook carousel hybrid that is constantly thinking about SOMETHING” and I have spent years learning to utilize this and make myself behave like a living breathing human being instead of a spaced-out daydreaming gremlin. Nothing you can say to me will be useful unless you are literally living inside my head alongside with me.)
My Top 10 Posts Ever
I’m @gemshine and I’ve been posting art on Tumblr for five years. Over those five years, I’ve had ten posts gain over 100 notes. Here I will talk about each one of them, their story, and how I think they got popular. If you like any of them you can click the link to take you to the original post, I really appreciate likes and reblogs. If you want to see more of my art please follow @gemshine.
1). How to Make a Comic Infographic - 237 notes - Mar 27 2020
This is my most popular post. It is a how-to infographic I did for class and I am really proud of it. Comics are really hard to complete, there are so many steps that without organization it is easy to get lost and give up. So, I thought letting others into my thought process would help.
I haven't made that many comics, but I do love making them. I love storytelling and character development so much, so as a visual artist comics are an amazingly creative medium for me to play around with and tell my story. Here is my short story about an elf lawyer named Cherry Elliott I made in 2018 for another class, that made me fall in love with comic making. I dream of writing and illustrating a graphic novel one day.
This was my first time doing the equivalent of a colour palette challenge, I think it turned out pretty well, I love the colour combo of pink, purple, and yellow/orange. The comic I used as the example was a comic made specifically for this infographic, featuring my original character, Mystic. I’m the person in the bottom right, illustrating a comic about “Some Elf Thing”, aka my original story passion project @mysticsrealm. My Mystic’s Realm stuff has not gained much traction yet, so it’s pretty wild that a post with an illustration of myself and my oc has gotten 237 notes and been reblogged 68 times.
Most people finding this post are going through some sort of “comic reference” related tag and I’m glad my experience is actually helping people start making comics. The majority of people tag it with “comic tutorial” or “reference”.
TLDR; this post is helpful for people looking to start making comics and it’s very aesthetic
2). Dad Hank Comic From Detroit Become Human - 205 notes - Aug 21 2018
At the time this post felt like it was blowing up by my standards. It is still my number two post. It gained traction because I posted it in a big fandom at the right time (#connorarmy). If I posted it now it would have maybe 20 notes. A lot of getting notes is posting at the right time of a fandom, but I don’t really know the science.
This post is nice and simple, I like the purple wash. I like Hank’s expression. These two and their dog are a really sweet little family and I cashed in on that angst, like I am one to do. At least it was kinda wholesome angst, I guess. We love found family.
3). Ladynoir!Opal Comic From Miraculous Ladybug and Steven Universe - 188 notes - Feb 26 2019
I was and still am really proud of this one. I was inspired to try lineless by @sneakysscribs‘ lineless art. Lineless art is a pain, but so pretty. This piece was made by having lines, but then colouring them in. I love how I was pushing the comic format, making the two gems flying in the beginning and Ladynoir!opal really pop out of the page. I also love that I actually made backgrounds for once in my life, they’re SU inspired and very aesthetic.
I call this AU Miraculous Universe, and it has been in my head a long time, starring Ladybug!Pearl and Chat Noir!Amethyst. It is not very fleshed out, but it is very fun. It also makes no sense. This concept is so oddly specific it’s hilarious. But I’m also rewarded in my uniqueness in that there’s nothing else like it and I got to work both the SU and ML tags.
4). Adrinino Dancing Comic From Miraculous Ladybug - 177 notes - Aug 15 2019
I just noticed my top 4 all had to do with comics. Hopefully, that’s a good omen for my future in graphic novel.
This piece was for the first and only (so far) zine I’ve been in, @theninozine. That is where the majority of people found this post. It was nice to create something knowing that people were going to see it. It was also nice to have my work displayed among so many talented and passionate artists. Drawing ships for ml is funny because to have to tag the same exact ship four times to account for their love square. Anyways this piece is very sweet and gay.
5). Viperinoire From Miraculous Ladybug - 166 notes - May 7 2020
This is my most recent post above 100 notes. And it was posted during the ML offseason. I’m not that big of a fan of the show, but I love the fan content a lot. We lot just kinda take elements from canon and do whatever we want with them. This Viperinoire post is a great example steering far from canon.
This post succeeded despite the last episode of Miraculous aired having been in Dec 2019 because of the active Lukanette fanbase. I have a theory that the reason ML is still so popular on the internet, despite a large crowd being disappointed with the show, is because the fan content gets a ton of interaction, encouraging creators to keep making more, keeping the fandom alive.
6). Christine Canigula From Be More Chill - 141 notes - Feb 4 2018
This was my second post to gain over 100 notes. I posted when the Be More Chill fandom was very popular. People were really nice in the notes, they really love ChristiiIIIIIIiine. In this post I was practicing posing and using a glowy tutorial I found for the stage lights. This is the scene during More Than Survive where she is lifted up and signs the sign-up sheet for the after school play. When I look at this piece I can see the progress I made to get that point, and how I’ve grown since.
7). Heather Chandler From Heathers The Musical - 120 notes - Feb 19 2017
This was my first post ever to get over 100 notes. I still think it’s pretty good actually, I really like the hair. This post was copied directly from a photo, which I think is pretty good practice for shading. During this time, I didn’t have a drawing tablet so I was posting traditional drawings. This post blew up over all the ones before it because it was at a good time in the Heather fandom and it looks pretty great tbh.
8). Green Diamond From Steven Universe - 108 notes - Aug 15 2018
Someone asked me to imagine two diamonds fused so I did. I think I did a pretty good job combining the aesthetics of Blue and Yellow to create a new gem with their own identity. This post got popular because of Bellow shippers. One thing I would change is that underneath her left arm you can see a little looseness of her top, I would have changed that to be form fitting to match with the SU style of drawing gems.
9). The Zen Garden From Detroit Become Human - 103 notes - Aug 27 2018
This is one of the only times I’ve ever practiced drawing a background. Came out pretty picturesque if I do say so myself. The Zen Garden from DBH has always been very pretty. This was really just an exercise for me to come out of my comfort zone and draw a place instead of a person. Actually, at first, it started as a background for [this post], but the background came out nicer than the subject, so I posted it on its own too.
10). Pearls From Steven Universe - 100 notes - Aug 14 2019
This post just got 100 notes, which lead me to making this post. I think I captured the SU art style for Pearl quite well. When I was younger I found a tutorial for how to draw Pearl and she became my go-to doodle. This post was made years later, but I definitely used the muscle memory I had for drawing Pearl. Though the Pearl I drew was in her bow outfit, this was my first time drawing Pearl in either of these outfits. This post was made before the SU movie a pretty good prediction might I say. I love Pearl a lot.
Thank you, everyone, so much for supporting my work, and may there be lots more in the future.
“‘A bad angel?’ I am absolutely not!”
“Angel what are you going on about?” Crowley asked, eyeing Aziraphale lazily from where he was napping. Or trying to, rather. Bit hard with his angel yelling about.
“This, this, this stupid presentation I received from Heaven! It got sent out to all the field agents who didn’t attend Gabriel’s mandatory meeting on, well, me it seems,” Aziraphale said, then huffed as he waved a hand toward a shiny white tablet resting on his lap. “It appears I’m still on the mailing list.”
Crowley could’ve sworn the tablet hadn’t existed a few minutes ago, could’ve sworn Aziraphale had never even given any tablet so much as a sidelong glance, yet there was the shiny contraption being picked up and shoved under Crowley’s nose.
“Wait, you mean they sent the PDF or the entire bloody tablet?” Crowley asked as he took it from Aziraphale and studied a Venn diagram of the sins Aziraphale had apparently committed: sloth, gluttony, pride, and lust.
“Of course they sent the tablet; how else am I supposed to see this…” Azirphale’s voice trailed off as he searched for the right words. “This idiotic libel!”
“Angel, you know as well as I do that you’ve never committed any sins,” Crowley said as he rolled over to place the tablet on thr nightstand next to his side of the bed. He gently pulled Aziraphale back down into bed from where he had been sitting against the headboard, then softly placed a few kisses into his hair.
They snuggled back into each other’s arms, and as Crowley slowly drifted off to sleep again he quietly asked, “Dinner at the Ritz tonight, angel?”
“You know, I rather think I’d like that.”
Heaven attempts to make sense of Things
There would have to be a PowerPoint presentation at a mandatory all-staff meeting, right? And who doesn’t love a Venn diagram??? Welcome to Hell Corporate Heaven, kids.
[Title of Presentation: What the Heck Is Up With Aziraphale?
Presented by the Archangel Gabriel*
*Produced in consultation with Archangels Michael, Uriel, and Sandalphon, and presented in co-sponsorship with the Metatron, which — And May I Remind You — remains the Official Spokesperson of God the Almighty, and speaks on Her Behalf.
Venn diagram with four intersecting circles, labeled clockwise from top:
Faulty Nature (a Bad Angel)
Proximity to Adversary (Demon)
Weakness of The Flesh (Years Spent in a Body)
Earth Stuff (Humans)
Intersection of Faulty Nature and Proximity to Adversary = Sloth
Intersection of Proximity to Adversary and Weakness of The Flesh = Lust
Intersection of Weakness of The Flesh and Earth Stuff = Gluttony
Intersection of Earth Stuff and Faulty Nature = Pride
Pride + Sloth = Falsifying Reports
Pride + Gluttony = Fine Dining
Gluttony + Lust = Fornication??!
Sloth + Lust = Cuddling
Center of Diagram, place at which all circles intersect = Aziraphale has scary powerz we have yet to explain.]
Thoughts on Powers of X #5
Didn’t quite catch up to Hickman, but I’m still going to get this done!
Can It Be Done?
Let me say off the bat that I think this is definitely the weakest of the HoX/PoX issues I’ve covered to date, although I still think there’s some useful stuff to be mined from here.
Starting with Xavier’s meeting with Forge: Hickman said in an interview that Forge being in his 90s X-uniform was an error, which suggests that this scene is supposed to depict Forge in his popped collar/short-shorts look before he joins the X-Men, which would make sense what with the meeting happening at his Dallas holographic house. (Although Xavier being in his X-movies wheelchair confuses the timeline some.)
Moving on from that, the bulk of their conversation revolves around the logistics of a fifth-generation Cerebro unit - which given that the specs we get later are for the seventh generation, makes me wonder what happened to the sixth.
Xavier claims that the first iteration was “solely my design” but that versions two through four were “Henry McCoy’s doing.” Is he hiding Moira’s involvement here?
We learn that the shift in primary function from location to copying didn’t happen until the fifth generation, which should give us a rough cutoff of how far back resurrections can go.
Forge identifies three key issues: storage, power, (namely, that they would need “an unlimited power source and unlimited storage”) and redundancy. More on this when we get to the infographic.
Xavier wanting five-fold redundancy is another example of five being a recurring number in HoXPox.
The solution to Forge’s issues turns out to be a combination of mutant technology and Shi’ar technology (notably antimatter engines and logic crystals...more on that in a bit), which Xavier seems quite smug about. Presumably this is due to his relationship with Lilandra - a lot of X-tech from the early 90s used “Shi’ar” as their technobabble of choice - but, given what we learned about Shi’ar in Moira’s Ninth Life using mutants as imperial subalterns, I wonder what their broader political interest is.
On a more general note, Xavier is being really manipulative throughout this discussion, but he barely needs to be, because Forge is always going to go for the technical challenge of pulling this off than the broader ethical questions of whether they should.
Cerebro Infographic:
Here, we learn that the current version of Cerebro is Version 7.0 - so at least two major updates beyond what Xavier and Forge were discussing.
The two main differences seem to be that, A. the new system is portable (hence why Xavier is always wearing it in HoX), and B. it no longer relies on Shi’ar power in favor of a Krakoan No-Space vent. This suggests a concerted effort to ground the new Krakoan culture on mutant technology without relying on outside sources (even allied ones).
Speaking of my earlier thinking about Krakoan biomachinery and cultural heroes, Forge will probably go down in the mutant history books for starting the Krakoan scientific revolution and directing it down firmly biological rather than mechanical lines.
A sign of how sci-fi this all could get is that he’s accomplished the astonishing feat of harnessing a “Krakoan No-[Space] Vent” to provide “an unlimited power source for mutants living on the island,” even before the revolution begins. At the same time, if my hunch about where the power is coming from is correct, it might not be the best idea to use literal hellfire to fuel the engines of your new society.
One sign that Krakoa isn’t at technological autarky yet is that they’re still reliant on “Shi’ar logic diamonds” as the “primary choice for data storage.” This raises two interesting questions: first, who has possession of the digitized Sinister database? And second, is this the technology that Doctor Gregor seems to have gotten her hands on in X-Men #1?
As with The Five, this infographic sets up story hooks by establishing points of vulnerability: the system requires a weekly three-hour backup and a yearly hard backup “during which the process cannot be interrupted and Xavier cannot be disturbed.” This creates opportunities for things to go haywire while Xavier is looking the other way.
There’s a bit more on the issue of downloading the wrong mind into the wrong body, although here there’s more of a suggestion that it would usually be fatal...unless you have a mutation that would allow you to survive. Dunno what kind you’d need tho.
We also learn that skilled telepaths can replace their own minds with previous versions (presumably outside of the resurrection process)...and that Xavier’s done it twice. When he did that is an interesting question, because there have been a couple instances in which Xavier has had to switch bodies, which may have prompted his downloading.
Finally, we learn that the backup locations are really spread out: one’s on Krakoa Pacific, one’s on Krakoa Atlantic, one’s on Octopusheim, one’s on the Mind, and one’s with Moira in No-Space. So definitely trying to spread this system out so that it can’t be easily destroyed.
For the Children:
Finally for the best part of the issue, Emma’s recruitment scene. As befits Emma’s personal idiom, the meeting takes place at the Louvre, as Emma contemplates the Winged Victory of Samothrace. An omen of victory or of the glory of a lost civilization?
Charles’ three-piece-suit and Cerebro is suprisingly dapper.
Speaking of Hickman and character voice, Emma Frost is clearly a character that Hickman just gets on a bone-deep level, and despite all the claims that HoXPoX is all exposition and no character work, this scene really is a tour de force for the woman that Emma Frost has become since New X-Men.
Notably, Emma Frost is here to ask some of the big meta-questions in her usual acid-tongued way: is the Krakoan project “heroic” or “reckless” or “both”?
We can see from the jump that Charles is interested in “the Hellfire Corporation” as “an international prime mover;” he wants Emma as the lynchpin of his economic/geopolitical blackmail system.
In order to get Emma - who’s still pissed about what happened with Genosha, as she has every right to be - to sign on the dotted line, Xavier needs Magneto to make the argument that only he can make about this being the opportunity to “make right all the things that went wrong” by using the resurrection system to reverse the genocide.
This is where I start to wonder about Sinister and timeline issues - Magneto talks about getting mutant populations from 198 to 100,000 to 2 million in the space of a year as being “woefully behind” schedule, which makes me think that Xavier and Magneto were primarily concerned with getting their system not only active but in mass production before ORCHIS or anyone else could stop them.
Emma asks the meta-question, “what’s going to make it different this time?” And we don’t really get an answer - beyond showing us the sweeping vistas of Krakoa, we don’t really learn what Emma saw that convinced her this could work, although we do get the more important character beat that explains that Emma gets on board “one more time, then, for the children.” At her core, Emma Frost is a teacher who will fight for the next generation of mutants.
At the same time, it’s not like she doesn’t like money...so the new Hellfire Trading Company will handle the international distribution of Krakoan wonder drugs with a fifty year monopoly giving them a quite lucrative world-wide market all to themselves. I will have a lot more to say about mutant economic policy in the future, let me assure you.
Interestingly, Xavier considers the “real matter at hand” to be getting the Hellfire Corporation representation on the Quiet Council (most likely out of an enlightened self-interest basis that you don’t really want that kind of mutant socio-economic power on the outside of the tent pissing in when they could instead be given a stake in Krakoa. It’s all very Hamiltonian.
I love the reaction shot when Emma learns that they want to bring Sebastian Shaw back from the dead to “run the black-book operations into countries who reject our sovereignty.” My guess is that Xavier and Magneto look at it as Shaw being a disposable and deniable asset who they could easily throw to the wolves if they get caught drug/mutant-smuggling. We had no idea, rogue actor, will face Krakoan justice, etc.
Finally, we get some good setup for the upcoming Marauders #1: Emma wants a third seat for Kitty Pryde (no matter what the actual title is), whose job it will be to “get the drugs in, get the mutants out.” Speaking of geopolitics...it surely didn’t escape people’s attention how many of the non-friendly nations had coastlines?
Quiet Council of Krakoa:
I don’t really want to spend any time discussing the Quiet Council here, because we get the reveal in the next issue. This is one of the few times where the whole delayed reveal through redacted infographic thing just did not work.
Hhowever, we do get a sense of future political conflict with “there is some debate as to whether this council will continue in perpetuity or if some other system of government will replace it.”
Xavier Reaches Out:
This is a bit more interesting: here we see the other speech that Xavier gave, the one that went out to mutants rather than humans. (Somewhat annoyed that we don’t have a clearer timeline on this.) As we might expect, Xavier leans heavily on the unity message: “now is the time to put aside all differences and realize we are one people.”
And we see the “invitation” being extended to any number of groups that Xavier has had issues with in the past: Exodus and the Acolytes, Mister Sinister (who’s killed off the other SInisters and walked off with the database...I guess because Xavier’s message set off the psychic “reminder”), Omega Red (who we haven’t seen much of), and Gorgon (only slightly more).
But the meat of this is Namor, who’s the only one actually having a conversation with Xavier. Namor comes off very Nietzschean, implictly describing himself as one of “those beyond” good and evil, and arguing that anti-mutant bigotry ultimately stems from ressentiment.
At the same time, Namor’s reason for rejecting Xavier’s offer raises the question of whether Moira fully “broke” Xavier of his original philosophy.
In the Year One Thousand...
Ah yes, X^3. In retrospect, a lot of this could have been more compressed, if that wouldn’t undermine the six-part structure.
Here we really get into the ambiguity of ascension: in order to “ascend,” homo novissima have to divorce their minds from their flesh - only their minds will be saved, while all that lives will be destroyed in fire and lightning. It’s very Gnostic, if you think about it.
Nimrod really goes into Exposition Mode to lay out what Hickman is getting at:
emphasizing how all of these scales end up suggesting an endless ladder of “self-improving, self-replicating machines" - it’s turtles all the way up and all the way down.
Kirbons is a nice touch.
I’ll get into Titan theory come the infographic, but I’ll reiterate that these intelligences don’t seem to be acting very intelligently: “we reached beyond ourselves to to build a world-mind and attract a...protector...instead we attracted a predator.” Predation and consumption sounds way more Jack London nature-red-in-tooth-and-claw.
Types of Societies Infographic:
Titans being “isolationist” is a bad sign, until you realize the alternative.
When Hickman talks about a “Type O” on the Kardashev Scale, I think he’s referring to a “Type Omega-minus” (a civilization that can control “the basic structure of space and time”), since a Type Zero civilization isn’t nearly advanced enough to fit this group.
Strongholds aren’t isolationist but “warring factions seeking to actively destroy or absorb other Strongholds in order to achieve Dominion status...expansion and conquest are the altar at which Strongholds worship.” Two rungs higher than the Phalanx, and we’re still talking about imperialism...
Only with the Dominion are we told (not shown) a civilization that’s truly godlike. The fact that they feel threatened by the Phoenix is definitely going to come back; Hickman loved playing around with Galactus on his FF run, so I can’t imagine he wouldn’t want to take a swing at the purple guy’s opposite number.
Good Omens 1-3
...Yeah, I decided to watch it. Didn’t take long, did it.
1
The opening sequence is like a bad infographic
Crowley's hair in the Eden scene looks like cat ears, fits right in with the cosplay eye lenses
So like one of the few actually funny gags in the book, Freddie Mercury's voice suddenly shifting into a message from Hell, was deemed unfilmable, huh? I don't know what I expected... :/
Hey is it just me or does Michael Sheen have surprisingly good Japanese pronunciation in his one short line lol
Good thing the series explained the baby mixup better than the book, both by explaining upfront what the original plan was, and specifying why Mary got the room wrong (because Crowley misunderstoon it first and told her, which isn't in the book). The card-dealing intercuts are unnecessary and cheesy, though.
Nice gag about Crowley being inconvenienced by his own trick
I still don't understand, is the implication that Crowley has been dyeing his hair since the dawn of time? What's up with these wigs with dark roots & dark eyebrows and stubble?
Drunk fictional characters are as unbearable as drunk real life people
Glad they cut out the bird-and-mountain bit. That belongs to Doctor Who now. I can't imagine listening to another Scottish Dr Who tell this story and being asked to take it seriously
Ew, refilling the bottles with the wine they've drunk? Gross!
The "Wait, starting a family actually sounds nice, I do want to raise a child together with you :)" vibe is much clearer than in the book
Were the nanny and the gardener supposed to be literally Crowley and Aziraphale in disguise in the book too? I assumed they were just some contacts they hired...
Why this "comical" music when Aziraphale starts doing tricks... They could have as well randomly played a laugh track. Hate this. Why are British directors always doing this to me?
2
Putting all the scenes about Newton and Anathema and their ancestors in one sequence sure makes them easier to follow
However was it that the crew made the plants tremble, I'm sure they laughed a lot while doing it
Really silly that Aziraphale has to look up what the Number of the Beast is
3
Excuse me, are "Crawly" and "Crowley" supposed to sound different? My non-native-speaker ears can't detect it.
Was this... overly graphic crucifixion scene... really necessary??
Ah, the sweet backstory, the actual reason I'm watching this series... Sheen's Extreme Heart Eyes kill me every time.
Fuckin. Romantic string music playing while Aziraphale is holding the books with a completely lovestuck expression on his face
I like Crowley's Lennon look actually
"You go too fast for me, Crowley" -- I felt a great disturbance in the fandom, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out "It's been six thousand years!!!!"
Can we... stop spending screentime on the Witchfinders... please.....
Famine's introduction was better in the book. I really appreciate the trimming down of sections with one-off characters, but "What the Horsemen of the Apocalypse are like in the modern world" was actually one of the good parts of worldbuilding that deserved its page count. I figured that the bit with the anorexic model would be censored out, but what was left didn't feel adequate at all. War's section was better. Also I liked how the book trusted us to figure out who they are before declaring it, while the series smacks unnecessary title cards right into your face.
